Documentary film ‘The Phase’ (2013)

02.24.2013 by OBE RC

The last 6 months we were focused on the movie ‘The Phase’. Next studies are coming soon.

THE PHASE (2013, 33 minutes)

It’s an astounding coincidence: in the absolute majority of accounts of the supernatural, be they biblical miracles or paranormal phenomena, the protagonist had been falling asleep or waking up at the crucial moment. As a result, there is something out there that has forever altered human history and culture – something we know nothing about.

What are they keeping from us? Who stunted human development and who has something to gain from that? What’s hidden inside each and every one of us – and what does it hold for the future?

Sensory-Motor Visualisation in Comparison with Other Techniques

03.12.2012 by OBE RC

STUDY OBJECTIVES

Prove or deny assumption regarding to superiority of Sensory-Motor Visualization technique (SMV

PARTICIPANTS

211 participants in 16 groups of trainee from different locations of CIS such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Tomsk, Omsk, Ufa, Samara, Kazan (Russian federation), and Kyiv (Ukraine). All groups were mixed by gender and age.

METHODS

Comparison of the effectiveness of sensory-motor visualization along with other techniques. Checked at awaking in the pre-negotiated loops of different techniques with the obligatory of sensory-motor visualization.

MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS

Statistics used for analyses:

* provided by the 8 teachers

* collected on 16 hand-on seminar

* based on 211 unique tests

* within 3 months

Sensory-motor visualization compared with techniques combined in following groups:

* imaging movements (mixed) such as swimmer, running etc techniques,

* rotation (mixed) and rolling up techniques,

* diferent listening technoques,

* visualization (mixed) techniques,

* images observing techniques,

* separation and phantom wiggling techniques,

* direct sleeping techniques.

The share of the sensory-motor visualization inside of 10 comparision groups was 19%. It visually represented in the following diagram:

ERRORS

Share of some techniques in the number of cycles was greater than that in other techniques in the data obtained from teachers. Different levels of teachers training and thy ability and quality of techniques explanation could bring some accuracy.

CONCLUSIONS

Contrary to expectations, the sensory-motor visualization was not the best but not the worst in compare with other techniques. In spite of its combination of three techniques, it is equally manifested itself, along with others. These data will likely show the overall picture but not an objective reflection of the situation.

In repeat of experiment and in the development of other similar experiments a special attention should by pay to:

* methodology comparison

* comparison criteria definition

* clear task formulation

NDE Simulating Experiment

02.21.2012 by OBE RC

“For the first time, we can not only collect and analyze near-death experiences, but also deliberately reproduce them. This achievement casts doubt on many earlier theories regarding the nature of this phenomenon.”

(This is a preliminary report. The full report will be published after all the experiments related to this study have been completed)

REM sleep: A Cause of Near-Death Experiences

By Michael Raduga, founder and head of the OOBE Research Center.

Abstract

Study Objectives

Prove the implication of REM sleep in the occurrence of NDEs by artificially reproducing near-death experiences during REM sleep.

Participants

3 groups of 10-20 volunteers in Los Angeles (United States), Moscow (Russian Federation), and Saint Petersburg (Russian Federation), as well as several dozen lucid dreaming and out-of-body experience practitioners in a remote group.

Methods

1 – Artificially reproduce near-death experiences during REM sleep using indirect techniques for achieving out-of-body experiences as a form of conscious (i.e. “lucid”) dreaming.

2 – Undertake a comparative analysis of near-death experiences artificially reproduced during REM sleep with a database of spontaneous near-death experiences.

Measurements and Results

20 volunteers in no mortal danger were able to experience a flight through a tunnel using techniques for achieving out-of-body experiences and lucid dreams. A comparative analysis demonstrated full consistency with spontaneous near-death experiences, with the only difference being the cause of the events.

Conclusions

REM sleep can implicated in near-death experiences, as experiment subjects in that very physiological state succeeded in artificially reproducing said experiences in great detail.

Key Indexing Terms: REM sleep; near-death experience; NDE; dream; lucid dream; lucid dreaming; out-of-body experience; OOBE.

Introduction

When near-death experience accounts are compared to those of out-of-body travel, two common denominators are observed: self-awareness and out-of-body perception. It may be that the two types of experience only differ in terms of what causes them and what plotlines the imagery follows. This has led some researchers to posit that in at least some cases, the near-death experience and out-of-body travel phenomena may be identical in nature. Notably, Stephen LaBerge (1985) lends this theory his support. The implication was nearly the same in a study by Kevin Nelson (2010) that demonstrated that the probability of having a near-death experience is many times higher for people who have deep, pronounced REM sleep that often even lingers on after the mind has awoken from sleep. Meanwhile, lucid dreams and out-of-body experiences are identical in nature (LaBerge, Levitan , 1991); both occur directly in REM sleep (LaBerge, Levitan, Brylowski, Dement, 1988).

The aim of this study was to demonstrate in an experiment that REM sleep can be directly implicated in near-death experiences at clinical death. To this end, the controllable form of out-of-body experience that occurs in REM sleep (LaBerge, Levitan, Brylowski, Dement, 1988) was selected to serve as a platform for reproducing near-death experiences to the last detail. In order to achieve more measurable results, the set objective was to repeatedly and most faithfully reproduce one of the most typical near-death experience narratives:  flying through a tunnel towards the light.

Methods

1. Reproduce the Near-Death Experience of a Flight through a Tunnel

All volunteers were instructed to perform certain procedures during morning awakenings in order to reproduce the near-death experience of flying towards the light at the end of a tunnel.

The method of cycling indirect techniques developed by Raduga M. (2011) was employed in order for test subjects to achieve a lucid dream within the shortest frame of time. The method consists in attempting to separate from the body immediately upon awakening. If unsuccessful, the subject then alternates special techniques for 3 to 5 seconds over the course of a minute. If some technique begins to yield results, then the subject keeps with it, intensifies the sensations, and once again tries to separate from the body. Experienced practitioners could use different methods to induce the right state (Raduga, 2011).

If a volunteer was able to experience the sensation of separating from the body, he or she was to try to see a tunnel with a light at the end. The volunteer was then to fall into that tunnel and try to fly up to the light, concentrating all the while on what awaited him or her at the end, be it deceased relatives, angels, or God.

Flight through a tunnel towards the light was chosen as the near-death experience to be reproduced due to widespread and well-known reports of its occurrence at clinical death. This flight-through-a-tunnel narrative also has specific indicia that can be used as benchmarks for faithfully reproducing the experience.

2. Compare Reproduced Near-Death Experiences with Spontaneous Ones

Flights through a tunnel towards the light achieved during the experiment were compared with a database of more than 2,900 spontaneous near-death experiences collected by the Near Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF) (Archived NDEs, 2012).

The comparison between experiment volunteers’ experiences and accounts from the database of real near-death experiences was based on indicia common to both phenomena and playing a key role in them: out-of-body perception, self-awareness, flight through a tunnel, a feeling of euphoria or joy, light at the end of the tunnel, and deceased relatives or other beings at the end of the tunnel.

Results

1. Reproduce the Near-Death Experience of a Flight through a Tunnel

A total of 20 volunteers partially or fully succeeded in reproducing a flight through a tunnel towards the light during REM-stage sleep. 6 were able to do so while falling asleep, 4 by becoming conscious while dreaming, and 10 upon awakening. Becoming conscious (or “lucid”) while dreaming was a side effect of employing indirect techniques. States of conscious awareness (i.e. “lucidity”) while dreaming were also used to achieve flight towards the light at the end of a tunnel, as both classic “lucid” or conscious dreams and out-of-body experiences occur during REM sleep.

Every experiment volunteer’s account exhibited the three primary indicia of the near-death experience of flying through a tunnel: the sensation of being out-of-body, full conscious awareness of events, and visual contact with a tunnel.

As is the case with spontaneous near-death experiences, each experiment participant’s narrative of the flight through the tunnel was unique. It’s possible that uniqueness of experience is a fourth indicium of near-death experiences. If so, it’s one that the experiment successfully tracked. This uniqueness of experience applies not only to the external appearance of the tunnel and the flight through it, but also to what the test subjects encountered when they reached the light. The longer test subjects stayed in the tunnel, the more unique their experiences were.

2. Compare Reproduced NDEs with Spontaneous Ones

Comparison of 20 reproduced NDEs with 37 spontaneous NDEs is presented in table 1. The comparison is made on 37 different patterns that can be found in reproduced and spontaneous NDEs both.

Discussion

Based on test subject accounts, typical near-death experiences were successfully replicated during REM sleep. The experiment reproduced the primary indicia of such experiences: out-of-body sensations, full conscious awareness of events, and flight through a tunnel. However, the artificially reproduced near-death experiences differed from their spontaneous counterparts on three counts, none related to what the subjects felt: 1) no cessation of vital functions was observed 2) the out-of-body experience was achieved deliberately 3) the experiment subjects looked for the tunnel on their own initiative – they didn’t fall into it spontaneously.

As an example, cardiac arrest and cessation of breathing do not mean that brain activity has stopped that very instant (Hazim, Winnerkvist, Miller, Iliopoulos, Reardon, Espada, Baldwin, 1998). Thus, it cannot be ruled out that brief REM sleep continues on over the first few seconds after death (Nelson, 2010). This especially applies to situations where anesthesia has been used, as it can quickly bring about REM sleep before the onset of clinical death. Essentially, this experiment can be seen as having mimicked the state of a person under anesthesia via the use of subwaking states.

Assuming that such near-death experiences indeed take place during REM sleep, spontaneous out-of-body travel and flight through a tunnel could be ascribed to the expectation of experiencing them. For example, a person begins to realize that he is near death, and starts expecting an imminent exit from the body and flight through a tunnel, as he has heard many stories to that effect. If he has remained conscious despite a lapse into REM-sleep induced by anesthesia or organ failure, his expectation will now project onto his subjective reality. In this case, the projection is less deliberate and conscious than it was in the experiment. However, it is identical in nature.

Indeed, remaining conscious while in REM sleep can explain the variance of the tunnel’s appearance and sensations in it during near-death experiences, including the substantial differences among narratives regarding what happens upon reaching the light. As a matter of fact, in the above case near-death experiences are a type of lucid or conscious dream, in which what is expected is what is projected (LaBerge, 1985). People have only a vague idea of what they are “supposed” to see: an exit from the body, a tunnel, and a light at the end. However, they usually don’t know the precise details of what awaits them: “What kind of tunnel, exactly?” “What exactly happens once I reach the light?” And so on. They experience the indicia common to the stories known to them, but the details of the experience are unique for each individual. As a result, 37 different patterns of NDEs’ plots were found in real NDEs while making comparison of it with simulated ones.

The experiment’s results also fully explain those “near-death” experiences that occur under no threat to life and limb – which actually comprise a big part of “near-death” experience reports (Archived NDEs, 2012).

Conclusion

The experiment demonstrated that REM sleep may indeed help explain at least a portion of near-death experiences. This is vouched for by the ability to artificially reproduce the near-death experience using techniques for achieving out-of-body experience, itself only being possible during REM sleep. In terms of sensation, experiences thus achieved differ in no way from spontaneous near-death ones at clinical death, and specifically – flights through a tunnel towards the light.

Philip Y., reported on 01/28/2012

…I tried to separate from my body during a morning awakening, but was unsuccessful. I then began doing the techniques of rotating and observing images… A moment later, I found myself in a tunnel with a light at the end. The sensation of flight towards the light lasted for 5 to 7 seconds. It was accompanied by a pleasant feeling and full awareness of what was going on…

  Susan P., #1434, Pleasant feeling pattern

…Then, it’s like I saw nothing but blackness and I could hear echoes of their voices. I didn’t feel afraid though, I felt fine and at peace but couldn’t figure out why…

Marty, #753, Short duration pattern

…I heard the most beautiful music that I ever heard and can’t describe it.  This experience lasted a few seconds and I came back in a reverse manner with the buzzing sound getting lower and lower…

Vitaly T., reported on 02/02/2012

…I awoke to the sensation of lying atop the back of my couch. I employed the phantom wiggling technique and separated from my body. I stood up and deepened the state as fast as I could. Everything became hyper-realistic… I then took a running jump through the window, closed my eyes, and kept thinking about nothing but the tunnel. I opened my eyes: I was flying through the tunnel… Inside the light at the end of the tunnel, something spherical and hazy appeared – something quite familiar. I lost my concentration for a split second while scrutinizing the haze, and began to fall. I fell from the tunnel and found myself gliding 100 yards east of my home. Upon touchdown, I was returned to my body…

  Victor, #116, Flying pattern

…Then I felt like I was flying through some kind of dark tunnel.  Insofar as I had already heard about this on American broadcasts and read about it in local papers, I was not surprised, but rather expected it for some reason…

Marie C., #2714, Falling back pattern

…As I went into the tunnel, I felt as if I were pushing my way through light, fluffy cotton.  I felt wonderful!   Suddenly I felt myself falling back into my body…

Lyubov S., reported on 02/05/2012

…As I tried to fall asleep in the morning, I saw a shimmering gleam with my inner sight. I tried to move my awareness towards that point of light, and then found myself moving towards it while inside of a dark tunnel. The tunnel began gradually contracting around me. I tried to touch its walls – they were similar to soft, brown-colored rope. I got the desire to stand up tall, and it turned out that the tunnel was about six-and-a-half feet in diameter. I continued moving forward towards the light, but everything still seemed somewhat dark. I had expected to reach the light, but was instead thrown back into real life…

  Christinal, #2796, Standing in a tunnel/diameter patterns

…Then I found myself standing in a vertical tunnel.  I say “tunnel” for lack of a better word. It seemed more like a well and I was standing at the bottom of it.  The top was about three feet above my head…

Yvonne W., #715, Touching a tunnel pattern

…I got the impression of wetness or shininess on the bricks in the tunnel but when I touched the bricks, which I did as I was advancing upwards in the tunnel, they were not wet…

Vyacheslav S., reported on 02/05/2012

…I woke up, and after performing the rotation and phantom wiggling techniques, I was immediately flying through the tunnel. Although tunnel was somewhat winding, a light was visible at the end… However, the closer I flew, the more the tunnel repelled me! I was eventually brought to a stand-still by the opposing force, and kind of hung in the air. I decided to break through no matter what. I pushed with all my might! Nevertheless, I was thrown back so hard that I lost all control, and when I came to I was back in my body…

  Larry D., #2149, Light in the end pattern

…I was in a tunnel with a light at the end of it, a very bright white light.  I had always thought of a dark tunnel, but this one was most merely correctly explained in the Kabala, as a geometrical tunnel of multicolored lights, as explained to me by a Rabbi…

Badtzmaru, #2481, Barrier pattern

…Although no lamps were visible, the tunnel and the pathway were brightly illuminated. For some reason, my mind was aware that this was the entrance to heaven. But as I tried to proceed upon the path I found that I could not move forward, as if the way was blocked by an invisible barrier…

Yekaterina Z., reported on 02/07/2012

…I awoke unable to move because of sleep paralysis. I decided to try to leave my body, and also used the techniques to this end. But nothing worked… Suddenly and unexpectedly, I realized that I was hanging up in the air by the wall on the other side of my room… It occurred to me that the light where the tunnel would start from should be on the ceiling. I looked up at the ceiling, and indeed, a bright white light pierced through it, forming an oddly shaped splotch. I flew up to it. I had hoped to see a tunnel, and there it was. Its walls were covered with bright, beautiful pictures of abstract patterns. And as it now turned out, there wasn’t a light at the end of the tunnel – just a dead end. But with some mental effort, a bright splotch nevertheless slowly started forming in the dead end. It was dazzlingly bright and white. I flew into it, and everything was so white that I couldn’t see anything at first… I was in a large hall with big windows – it was like some kind of sunlight-drenched enclosed porch. Some men came up to me. One of the men said that I wouldn’t be able to return to my body even if I wanted to, since I was dead. That wasn’t a pleasant thing to hear… I got the feeling that I would still be able to return to my body on the bed, and did so as quickly as I could…

  Sam J., #719, Big room pattern

…Once in ICU I left my body and went into the corner of the unit and watched as they shocked my chest.  3-2-1 pop!  Again 3-2-1 pop.  Then I left the room. No tunnel.  For me it was like going to sleep and going right into a dream.  I went into this room bathed in gold white light that reminded me of a library…

Adeline N., #2251, Talking pattern

…I was suddenly aware of two friends who had passed recently.  They were asking (beckoning) me to come over.  I didn’t hear voices but I heard them.  I must have known what that meant because I said I couldn’t come now because I had three little kids at home who needed me…

Nadezhda S., reported on 02/08/2012

…I awoke and began performing the technique of rotating along my head-to-toe axis, then the swimmer technique, and then observing images. I was able to leave my body after a couple of tries. Now that I was out of my body, I wanted to see the tunnel – and it immediately appeared in front of me. The tunnel was kind of like a pipeline. It had rings all along its surface and a white light at the end. I enjoyed flying through the tunnel. It was nice and warm and bright! It didn’t feel like I had died or was dying. It was so nice that I wanted to be there as long as possible! Once I flew to the end of that tunnel, the surface underneath was like the clouds in the sky – fluffy and white. It was all quite realistic. I couldn’t feel my physical body, and no extraneous thoughts entered my mind. I saw my deceased husband there in the spirit. We spoke for several minutes. His words, touch, bearing, and feelings were real, just like during his life. Later on, when I felt it was time to leave, I went up to the tunnel, jumped, and gently landed in my body…

  David B., #2294, Tunnel’s wall pattern

…I could see that the walls of the tunnel had dark dirty like rings going around it with little round dark spots on the tunnel wall…

Ricardo F. #2023, Deceased relatives pattern

…I ascended through a tunnel at the end of which there was a lot of white light. When I got to the end, my deceased father-in-law was waiting for me there, to my surprise…

Valery N., reported on 02/08/2012

…I found myself in a nearly vertical tunnel without going through any intermediate states beforehand. However, it didn’t look at all like a tunnel. It was more like a beam of light in the darkness. Up above at the end of the tunnel, a golden-white fireball with feathery edges was radiating. This fireball was pulling me in. I got the strong urge to merge with it and then disappear inside it. However, an invisible barrier formed at some point. This barrier began to press back down on me. While I was pushed down, numerous statues of gods and goddesses of some sort became visible at the edges of the tunnel. At first, all of them were golden. Then, they darkened and turned deep-green. The light in the tunnel itself gradually extinguished, and I was engulfed in darkness…

  Larry, #93, Sphere pattern

…That’s when my life was passing.  Then I’m up here looking at this orange and yellow ball, that was soft – it was hot – looking into a tunnel.  Everything’s quiet, dead quiet, but it’s peaceful…

Deborah S., #1196, Ending in darkness pattern

…As I went to put my hand on the door a being said something to me and in my mind I started to think of my three small children. The next thing I felt was a swish and I was in total darkness…

Vladimir D., reported on 02/09/2012

…I entered the phase 5 minutes after lying down in bed at 1 am. I didn’t use any techniques – the feeling of separation simply arose on its own. Next, I realized that I was standing, and tactile sensations emerged. I began to blink hard and shake my head in an effort to become able to see. After several seconds, I began to discern wooden walls, doors, and a scuffed-up floor… Directly in front of me was a bright light emanating from a room with an open door next to the passageway… I rushed into it at full speed. I was able to discern the room’s bright walls and the intricate tapestry on the floor. There was a table with a person sitting behind it. At that point, everything dissipated and I was thrown back into my body…

  Moselle, #1501, Passageway pattern

…I recall being rushed to the OR after that it seemed I was rushing through a long passageway which was filled with colors and sound…

Tallulah F., #2775, Door pattern

…I got close enough to the light to make out a doorway and the light I was seeing was spilling out from the door which was only partially open…

Andrey K., reported on 02/10/2012

…While emerging from sleep,
I got the thought of taking off into a tunnel right then and there… That’s when separation from my body occurred. I found myself in pitch-black space… the darkness began churning above me. A disc with glistening edges gradually came into being. It quickly grew to at least the size of a stadium, and then the space inside it somehow transformed. A tunnel appeared… I floated up head-first towards the light, which gradually brightened and illuminated the hitherto shadowy figures around me. Those shadow-figures incrementally began to resemble everyday people. They were flying together with me towards that light. The flight seemed to last no longer than a minute, and then everything around me was flooded in bright light. Some feeling of omnipresent peace and tranquility rushed in. Though I fought to remain conscious, everything dissipated and I sank back into sleep…

  Tish Z., #2863, People’s shadows pattern

…As I walked further into the tunnel, I could see some cloudy figures, like indistinct shadows of people.  But then there was one that I just knew was my mother, who had passed…

Erich B., #2935, Total relaxation pattern

…I had the experience of tunnel, light, music total relaxation and could see a figure of a person at the end of tunnel, but could not recognize it…

Vladimir D., reported on 02/11/2012

…Several minutes after lying down to go to sleep, I got the sensation of a slight separation from my body. I began conjuring a tunnel. Doing this brought on the sensation of flying upwards while simultaneously rotating around my head-to-toe axis… I didn’t see a light. There was a soupy darkness that filled up the tunnel. However, I saw that the tunnel walls were flashing (like the flashing you see through the window while in an underground subway car).  After 2 minutes of flying and rotating around, my head started to spin. Nausea set in. This forced me to cut the experiment short…

  Susan P., #1434, No light in a tunnel pattern

…Nothing made much sense to me but I didn’t feel any pain or fear, also I could hear someone praying over me. I saw no light in this experience, just a black tunnel. Then they had revived me and I was ok…

Michael B., #2038, Spinning pattern

…I do not recall actually running more than a couple of steps, but at the point when I was struck by the bus I remember watching myself spinning through space…

Sherman T., reported on 02/12/2012

…After becoming conscious in a dream I felt my inner-self roll off my bed like I had floating off the edge of my bed into an abyss… I told myself “go with the flow, relax and look for the light”… I was face to face with the light tunnel floating to its opening. Then I electorate in speed surrounded by light. And some being, which did not have shape, as the entire space I was in, was conscious, aware, and alive. I was within a living place. This being showed me children, people floating as if they were trapped under ice needing some type of help. Then it gets fuzzy….I feel myself float back…

  Dennise M., #2608, Floating pattern

…I had the sensation that I was floating down a path or tunnel, I wasn’t in body form anymore, and saw a very bright light, like fluorescent…

Stella, #1708, Surrounding light pattern

…My speed kept growing until the light could no longer reach me and I saw that the tunnel was one giant curve, but a curve that was barely discernible, yet I could feel it. Then I was home. The light surrounded me…

Christian E., reported on 02/13/2012

…Saturday morning at approximately 4:30AM, I managed to get in the phase by becoming conscious in a dream. First I thought about the tunnel and the light, and then I was translocated to it. I was pulled at what seemed to be extremely high speed. I could see a faint light at the end of the tunnel. As I was being “pulled” toward the light, I had been expecting to feel great peace or joy or whatever comes with an NDE, but felt nothing. I was a little disappointed. I was being pulled really, really fast. It felt like my body was stretching a little. I could see the light growing larger and larger, and I started to become a little concerned about what I might encounter once I reached the light…

  Joel B., #611, High speed pattern

…I was then traveling through a tunnel at a very high speed. This tunnel seemed to be very long, like miles, yet it didn’t seem to take any time to go through…

Roselyne L, #2270,  Growing light pattern

…I saw I was above the operating table! And my body was floating in a tunnel, at the end was a light that was growing bigger…

Irina L., reported on 02/16/2012

…I become conscious while dreaming… There is a platform for the spiral staircase leading up into the sky. Ascending the stairs… We turn to the right. It envelops a dense fog, but very dark. Ahead of the tunnel narrows, from there a warm light silver shines… Out of the tunnel, silver light envelopes the whole space. Inside is warm and cozy. Under the left arm I have see someone. This is a girl-angel! She has hurly hair and a long white robe. Around me is a green meadow with a river and weeping willows. The grass under my feet is just like silk. Plays soft music. So ethereal. At the shore an old man sits at a table with an open book. Then I wake up…

  Jennifer H., #1587, Staircase pattern

…As soon as I was under the anesthetic I seemed to travel at speed along a dark tunnel, vortex. I reached the end on a sort of moving staircase…

Gloria M., #586, Angel encounter pattern

… Suddenly I was standing in front of a massive being an Angel I think. The beautiful white wings were stretched out.. It was so big I couldn’t see the face or head…

Michael R., reported on 02/19/2012

…I awoke at 9 am and immediately remembered about the experiment with the tunnel. Without using any techniques, I began to imagine that I was flying through a tunnel towards a light. Nothing happened for several seconds. Then, the sensation of flying through a tunnel became increasingly realistic. After another few seconds, I felt every sensation of flying through the tunnel. I wasn’t imagining anything to myself, and no longer felt my physical body in my bed. Contrary to my expectations, there was no light at the end of the tunnel. The tunnel itself was gray and ribbed. More importantly, it was also narrow and winding. Maybe, the fact that it was so winding was why I hadn’t been able to see the light for so long. It soon appeared anyway. As I gradually neared the light, it was disappearing and then reappearing again…

  Astrid K., #2020, Gray tunnel pattern

…I “woke up” or more like suddenly appeared laying on the railroad tracks which were in the dark tunnel (at first it felt very cold) I could see its dimensions, color which was dark gray /black, it had a very strong smell of a fuel that drips from the trains onto the railroad trucks…

Teresa M., #974, Ringed tunnel pattern

…I was going down feet first so fast I can’t even put it into words. I looked at myself I had the hospital gown on and it didn’t even move. I got very scared because it was so black and I also noticed that it has rings around it like a vacuum hose…

…I was falling back asleep in the morning while imagining the tunnel. It appeared after a while and pulled me out of my body and right inside. The tunnel was narrow – not more than a yard wide. It looked something like a matrix or a crossword puzzle. Alongside all of its walls were diagrams and squares of some sort, as well as bunches of numbers in boxes. I flew for quite a long time, but due to the speed couldn’t recall even a fragment of that matrix. There was a light at the end of the tunnel. Once I fell through it, I encountered my deceased cat. He took me into a room that was also flooded in light. My grandma and grandpa were there, and sitting in different corners for some reason. I said hello to them, but then rushed to get out of that empty room…

…I must have lost consciousness.  I remember a loud roaring in my ears and rushing through a long, dark tunnel at the end of which was a very bright light…

…7:30am I started to meditate and I felt being zapped inward into a black space… I then saw energy bodies or people spinning around in the black space they looked like neon lights going into the this big ball of light suspended in the black space like a wormhole. This ball of light kept growing every time energy bodies were becoming part of it, like everyone was going back to the source! I was been drawn to go into the light, but I felt I was there just as an spectator, and I was not allow to approach the light! After seeing what I needed to see, I was zapped back outward to my body. It felt incredible going inward ant then coming back outward!..

…Having been able to “catch” a nighttime awakening, I exited using the technique of sensory-motor visualization. After accomplishing two items on my plan-of-action, I decided to fall down head-first into the tunnel with my eyes closed… I felt a pull, and even though I had initially been falling down, I got the feeling that I had changed directions in mid-air. The tunnel became visible. It was black with white plumes erupting on the sides, as well as some laser beam-like lines. Some kind of music began playing – some kind of soothing sounds. There was also this blissful feeling that long-awaited freedom and happiness were immanent. I didn’t fly all the way to the light – unfortunately, I was returned to my body…

Pinched Nose Reality Check When Aware of Phase

02.07.2012 by OBE RC

35 volunteers were asked to perform a test in the phase involving pinching the nose to the point where the airways are completely blocked. They would then have to try to breathe through it and report their results. The aim of the experiment was to see how often the pinched nose reality check works in the phase when a practitioner knows he is in it.

Out of the 35 volunteers, 25 managed to enter the phase and accomplish results that differed from one another. Out of the 25 accomplished volunteers, 19 (76%) were able to paradoxically breathe through a pinched nose, while the remaining 6 (24%) failed to do so and experienced impairment of respiration (but not so acute as to the point of suffocating).

Already, the results apparently show that the pinched nose reality check is fairly reliable – especially when the practitioner is aware of being in the phase. Whether the other 9 volunteers out of 35 that are yet to report back results can make a significant difference to this conclusion remains to be seen. It is worth mentioning that a minority of volunteers that failed to breathe through a pinched nose were, at first, unsure whether they were awake or in the phase at the time. Subsequently, they fouled or fell asleep and realised that they had been in the phase indeed.

Likewise, a particular volunteer that knew she was in the phase and yet was unable to breathe through the pinched nose, was subsequently able to do so after reminding herself that it is all a “dream”. It is a fair statement, however, to say that the majority knew they were in the phase and were able to breathe while carrying out the reality check.

To add to our understanding, according to comments from volunteers, it appears that when the phase is deep, it can be hard to breathe through the pinched nose at the beginning as one often has to consciously force such experience. Perhaps, a deep phase reminds us of the sensation of being awake in the real world, which, in turn, could subconsciously equate the idea of breathing through a pinched nose as an impossibility. Hence, the restriction of performing what is known to be impossible becomes reality in the phase.

In the majority of cases, however, phasers will feel their nose being pinched but can still breathe through it. Hissing noises like that of a balloon being deflated or air coming out of a punctured tyre can sometimes be experienced. Other unusual sensations include air coming out of one’s ears or a breeze is felt.

Finally, it is still worth considering the following factor when applying the pinched nose reality check in the phase state: the stronger the doubt that one is in the phase, the less reliable the pinched nose method becomes.  This is because, in cases of real doubt, it is very likely to produce the same result as in reality.  In order to make this reality check more efficient, practitioners should always be open to the possibility that they are in the phase no matter how realistic their sensations might be.

Lucid Dreaming: A Cause of Religious Visions in the Bible

12.16.2011 by OBE RC

“Some might say that we have found God or discovered something about His nature. However, we only conducted this experiment in order to prove that the subject of our research can be found in ancient sources like the Bible. This has no bearing on religion itself. However, one may conjecture how wide an impact this phenomenon has had on all human culture and history”

(This is a preliminary report. The full report will be published after all the experiments related to this study have been completed)

By Michael Raduga, founder and head of the OOBE Research Center.

Abstract

Study Objectives

The goal of the study is to substantiate mention of lucid dreaming in the Bible.

Participants

30 volunteers, most without prior lucid dreaming experience (though some had had spontaneous experiences in the past).

Methods

1 – Reproduce a biblical angel encounter as described in 1 Kings 19:4-6 in an experimental setting using the indirect method for achieving lucid dreams.

2 – Calculate the statistical probability of spontaneously experiencing the events described in 1 Kings 19:4-6.

3 – Compare 1 Kings 19:4-6 as well as three other biblical passages with 620 first-time lucid dreaming experience accounts related by modern practitioners in terms of primary and common indicia.

Measurements and Results

15 volunteers were able to reproduce the angel encounter described in 1 Kings 19:4-6 either in part or in full. Statistics show that experiences similar to just the aforementioned biblical account alone will occur spontaneously at least once in the lifetime of one person in 5 thousand. When four biblical accounts are compared with first-time spontaneous lucid dreams, it is observed that the same situations and indicia repeat: the state of awakening or falling asleep, vibrations being felt, sleep paralysis, fear, and full conscious awareness.

Conclusions

It can be asserted with a high degree of confidence that the majority of biblical events occurring at the threshold of sleep were the products of spontaneous lucid dreams (false awakenings).

Key Indexing Terms: dream, lucid dream, lucid dreaming, bible, religious vision.

Introduction

The goal of the study was to substantiate mention of the lucid dreaming phenomenon in a number of Bible passages. The hyper-realistically of lucid dreaming experiences when they occur just before or after sleep served as the impetus for the study (Raduga, 2011). After spontaneously entering a lucid dream, a person often has no way of realizing that everything occurring is not a real experience in the physical world (LaBerge, 1985). This phenomenon has a chance to be the reason of some religious visions in the Bible.

Methods

1. Mass recreation of Prophet Elijah’s angel encounter in the Bible:

30 volunteers (19 males/11 females), most without prior lucid dreaming experience (though some had had spontaneous experiences in the past), were instructed to perform certain procedures during morning awakenings in order to replicate the biblical account 1 Kings 19:4-6. Almost 100 volunteers initially reported to participate in the experiment (UCLA, the US city of Los Angeles, California), but most of them resigned due to fear, religious objections, or other concerns. 30 volunteers include 6 experienced practitioners participating remotely comprised the control group.

The method of cycling indirect techniques developed by the OOBE Research Center over 2007-2011 was employed in order for test subjects to achieve a lucid dream within the shortest frame of time (Raduga, 2011). The method consists in attempting to separate from the body immediately upon awakening. If unsuccessful, the subject then alternates special techniques for 3 to 5 seconds over the course of a minute. If some technique begins to yield results, then the subject should keep with it, intensify the sensations, and once again try to separate from the body.

If a volunteer or practitioner was able to experience the sensation of separating from the body, they were to try to find an angel in their bedroom, and then eat something in order to exactly reproduce 1 Kings 19:4-6 in the Bible (it happened to the prophet Elijah on the way to Beersheba in Judah):

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I [am] not better than my fathers.

5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise [and] eat.

6 And he looked, and, behold, [there was] a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

This biblical event was chosen from among a multitude of passages relating experiences akin to lucid dreaming due to its straightforwardness and relatively detailed description. Using available techniques, anything could have been reproduced – be it a vision of God, an encounter with an angel, or any other event (Raduga, 2011; LaBerge, 1985). But in terms of verifiable results, angels were the ideal choice as Western culture provides a relatively well-established image for them (wings, white robes, halos, etc).

In order to replicate the biblical account as faithfully as possible, participants were instructed that if they experienced spontaneous lucid dreams when sleeping, they were to recall the physical body, become present in it, and then experience separation from the body.

Separation from the body usually seems like a completely ordinary movement, as if it were made with the physical body (Raduga, 2011). The practitioner simply stands up, rolls out, or levitates as if he were doing so in reality. It’s easily possible in the proper moment upon awakenings and it is the reason of false awakenings (Raduga, 2011).

2. Calculation of the statistical likelihood of the event described in 1 Kings 19:4-6 occurring

The approximate odds of the average person encountering an angel as in 1 Kings 19:4-6 were calculated using both independently gathered statistical data (Raduga, 2011) and that of other sources (UNFPA, 2011; McEvedy, Jones, 1978). The first step was to obtain the percentage of the total population that has experienced lucid dreams. This data was then further processed to yield the statistical likelihood of experiencing separation from the body and seeing an angel.

3. Comparison of biblical phenomena with first-time lucid dreaming experiences

Four of the most clear-cut and detailed biblical descriptions of what are suspected to be spontaneous and unrecognized lucid dreams were selected: 1 Kings 19:4-6, Samuel 3:2-6, Job 4:12-16, and Genesis 15:12. Those passages were then compared with 620 first-time lucid dreaming accounts collected on aing.ru that belongs to the OOBE Research Center (2011). The comparison was based on common events and indicia: falling asleep or waking up, sleep paralysis, fear, noises, vibrations, the presence of animate objects, etc.

The four selected biblical passages do not relate dreaming. Rather, the protagonists in them are in a state of full conscious awareness. The large number of bible passages detailing visions that occurred during dreams – as is explicitly indicated in the passages themselves – were not taken into account.

Results

1. Mass recreation of Prophet Elijah’s angel encounter in the Bible:

24 of 30 volunteers were able to achieve one or more lucid dreams over the course of 4 weekends (November 11 through December 11, 2011) (Table 1). 15 of those were able to reproduce the angel encounter described in 1 Kings 19:4-6 either in part or in full (Table 2).

Indicators of success in reproducing Elijah’s biblical encounter with an angel (1 Kings 19:4-6) comprised the following: full conscious awareness, awakening/falling asleep, separation from the body, visual contact with an angel, and consuming food. Six subjects were able to complete the task in full (Table 2).

Another 9 participants were able to complete the experiment’s task partially, but still see an angel in one form or another while in a fully conscious state. However, in some cases the angels did not take on a traditional appearance (e.g. wearing white and having wings), although the participants nevertheless identified them as angels (Table 2).

Over its extensive didactic and analytical experience, the OOBE Research Center has developed indicators and procedures for distinguishing real experiences from fabrication and fantasy. No dubious responses were included in the statistics.

2. Calculation of the statistical likelihood of the event described in 1 Kings 19:4-6 occurring

Assuming that Elijah’s encounter with an angel (1 Kings 19:4-6) actually took place during an unrecognized lucid dream (in the form of a false awakening), the probability of having the same experience can be calculated on the basis of the primary indicia contained in that bible passage.

According to the outcome obtained (Table 3), around 12,540 people alive at the time of the biblical event of 1 Kings 19:4-6 would have had an experience similar to it, and 1,463,000 people alive at present (in December 2011) have encountered angels in identical circumstances. In other words, the odds of a person experiencing a false awakening and seeing an angel are 1 in 5,000. And this is despite quite a large number of stringent conditions having to be met. If similar biblical phenomena were to be analyzed in the same way, it might be found that their odds of occurrence are dozens or even hundreds of times higher.

The weakest link in the calculation is the likelihood of seeing angels out of all possible animate objects that may be encountered during spontaneous lucid dreaming experiences, as there is no confirmed data regarding its probability. The calculation uses the approximate minimum percentage of experiences featuring angels, and so the actual probability might vary by several multiples in either direction. The resultant number of people likely to have the experience is nevertheless massive. It may also be postulated that the more religious one is and the more one expects angels (whether consciously or unconsciously), the higher the odds of seeing them. This was partially proven by the experiment’s deliberate contact with angels: volunteers had wanted to see angels, and indeed saw them – though not every time.

If it were taken into consideration that many people experience both lucid dreaming and out-of-body experiences several times – or even many times – over the course of their lives (Gackenbach, 1984), then the actual odds of seeing angels would be even greater. The probability of seeing an angel could conceivably be at least double that of our calculations. Moreover, those calculations do not account for the superficial and shallow forms of lucid dreaming, out-of-body experiences, and other similar phenomena. Nearly everyone encounters these phenomena in such mild forms, and quite often at that (e.g. false awakenings, unreal movement and sounds upon awakening, half-conscious dreams, etc).

3. Comparison of biblical events with lucid dreaming experiences

Typical indicia of an unrecognized lucid dream include: thoughts before falling asleep match subsequent events, awakening before an unusual event, conscious awareness, and falling asleep before an unusual event.

The Bible, 1 Kings 19:4-6:

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I [am] not better than my fathers.

5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise [and] eat.

6 And he looked, and, behold, [there was] a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

For comparison, here is an account related by a modern practitioner (First-Time Lucid Dreaming Accounts, 2011):

…I was somewhere between 8 and 10 years old. The alarm clock went off, I was having a hard time getting out of bed. I thought for a few moments about how it was time to go to school… Then I got up out of bed, already wide awake, and went to the bathroom… All of the sudden mom came into the room and asked me to wake up and go to school… And this happened more than once…

Typical indicia of an unrecognized lucid dream include: thoughts before falling asleep match subsequent events, beginning to fall asleep, the presence of conscious awareness, and hearing voices:

The Bible, Samuel 3:2-6:

2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli [was] laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, [that] he could not see;

3 And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God [was], and Samuel was laid down [to sleep];

4 That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here [am] I.

5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here [am] I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.

6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here [am] I; for thou didst call me.  And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.

For comparison, here is an account related by a modern practitioner (First-Time Lucid Dreaming Accounts, 2011):

…Literally just seconds before I fell asleep, it was as if someone was calling me… Please note that I was not yet asleep. At first it was a normal “voice”… then it got bossier, and then it started ordering me about.  And then it was as if something was pulling me into the bed…

Typical indicia of an unrecognized lucid dream include: beginning to fall asleep, the presence of conscious awareness, fear, vibrations, and hearing voices:

The Bible, Job 4:12-16:

12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.

13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,

14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:

16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image [was] before mine eyes, [there was] silence, and I heard a voice, [saying],

For comparison, here is an account related by a modern practitioner (First-Time Lucid Dreaming Accounts, 2011):

…There was a sharp crack, and the feeling of falling down. Someone’s unintelligible whisper in my right ear changed into a scream, which died down for a second, only to blast in again from all sides. I was panicking in mortal fear…

Typical indicia of an unrecognized lucid dream include: beginning to fall asleep, the presence of conscious awareness, fear, and hearing voices:

The Bible, Genesis 15:12:

12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

For comparison, here is an account related by a modern practitioner (First-Time Lucid Dreaming Accounts, 2011):

…I was being awoken by an acute fright that had begun while I was dreaming… A wild terror suddenly overcame me. Something started to make a lot of noise in the distance…

Discussion

It is important to point out the fact that biblical accounts of having visions while in subwaking states are not only reproducible and statistically likely to have occurred, but also contain no detail inconsistent with lucid dreaming. That is, not a single feature of 1 Kings 19:4-6, Samuel 3:2-6, Job 4:12-16, or Genesis 15:12 would differentiate those events from spontaneous or deliberate lucid dreams. The full agreement of common indicia points to a high degree of probability that spontaneous lucid dreams lie at the root of those encounters, as well as many others in the Bible.

If a biblical figure had been in a sitting or reclining position before and after having a religious vision, then it can be asserted with a high degree of confidence that a spontaneous, unrecognized lucid dream had taken place. When a lucid dream occurs just before or after sleep, realism of perception is often indistinguishable from that of everyday waking life (Raduga, 2011). Meanwhile, the content of the lucid dream is tightly interwoven with the physical world. This can all easily lead to a mystifying experience. The same can be assumed not only for other biblical visions, but also for any unusual and realistic experiences that begin and end while in a relaxed physical posture.

Considering that the approximate odds of an average person experiencing something similar to 1 Kings 19:4-6 are 1 in 5,000, it may be confidently postulated that such events have happened to a multitude of people over the past millennia, including the Old Testament era. Depending on levels of awareness and general interests, such an experience could have been interpreted in a whole variety of ways. Undoubtedly, religious people could have interpreted such experiences as bona fide validation of their beliefs, with this subsequently finding expression in texts like the Bible.

The prophet Elijah, often mentioned in the Bible and the Koran, is one of the most significant figures in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Nevertheless, this study has shown that he may have encountered the phenomenon of lucid dreaming, which also served as the cause of some of the religious experiences in his life. Judging from it all, the same can be said for some other biblical figures.

Conclusion

Even the complex vision described in 1 Kings 19:4-6 was reproduced with relative ease by people without prior lucid dreaming experience. No substantive differences separate that biblical event from what was experienced by experiment participants. The experiment, statistic results, and comparison of experiences make it possible to conclude that the Bible indeed mentions the phenomenon of lucid dreaming on many occasions. Meanwhile, the subject matter of the lucid dreams was determined by general interests or thoughts before falling asleep, and not external stimuli. A comprehensive investigation of this possibly found no fact indicating that this was not the case. Indeed, nearly every indication and fact supports this conclusion.

Recreation of Prophet Elijah’s angel encounter in the Bible

Indicators of success in reproducing Elijah’s biblical encounter with an angel (1 Kings 19:4-6)

Voluteers

Full conscious awareness, awakening/falling asleep, separation from the body, visual contact with an angel, and consuming food (Debbie H.)

…When I woke a second time and was doing this, it definitely felt like something different happened. The vibrations were very strong and I know my breathing got heavier and deeper. I tried levitation and I got flashes of being out of my body. I thought, “This is it,” and immediately went to look for the angel. In the corner of my bedroom, it definitely felt like it was there… I asked the angel for any information, and it said it was Gabriel! It was a fairly traditional looking angel – large and with wings. I then went to look for food, found an apple in the kitchen, and took a bite…

(Yaroslav K.)

I awoke in a half-awake state, and immediately separated from my body by standing up. I was in my room, it was night outside the window, and a light shone in the kitchen. I grabbed an open can of corn from the refrigerator, and then went towards the balcony. I put my right hand back behind me, trying to feel for an angel. As soon as I had touched it, I turned around. The angel was hovering three feet off the floor right in front of me. He was bright white, had wings, and was about one and a half feet tall. He was looking at me. I felt a slight sense of shock and surprise. He disappeared after a few moments, and so I ate the corn and then went off to complete the rest of my plan of action…

(Ben R.)

…I sat back in my favorite chair for out-of-body experiences, did the exercises, and got in the “phase” almost immediately… However, I set my mind to the task of seeing an angel… At one point, engulfed in a yellow glow, a bright white light appeared in the center, and the image of an angel began to manifest. It quickly morphed to have a more demonic appearance and bat-like wings. I “wiped” the image and tried again. For a brief instant, I saw a perfect, beautiful angel at a distance…

I decided to focus on the second task of getting something to eat, and so I manifested some pastries… I was, however, able to keep an apple pie clearly in my vision. I grabbed a slice and took a bite. I could not actually taste the flavor of the apple pie, but I was overcome with the sensation of eating something good…

(Anton M.)

I left my body, and then summoned my “guide”, and he came in the form of an angel. I asked him for some cookies and water. He gave them to me readily. I ate everything up, experiencing every taste sensation and the feeling of satiation. I returned to my body and fell right back asleep…

(Michael R.)

I lay down in the evening to catch a little sleep. I soon awoke in order to try to take off my headphones, but quickly realized that they actually weren’t there… I rolled out of my body to the right-hand side right then and there – and found myself standing at the door. I focused my attention on there being an angel behind the door, and opened it abruptly. The angel wasn’t there – but my grandma was, sleeping on a chair. I turned my back and tried to imagine an angel being there instead of grandma, and then turned back around… Now facing the room again, I still saw grandma there sleeping, but with large gray wings pressed between her back and the chair… I quickly made for the kitchen and grabbed the first thing that appeared on the table: an egg and some meat. I immediately stuffed them into my mouth. The egg turned out to be hard-boiled and rotten. I almost couldn’t keep it down. Nevertheless, I decided to behold an angel that was the real thing, and so I went back to my grandmother. Immediately after stepping in, she appeared in all white, was now blond, and radiant in a way. The abrupt transformation somewhat frightened me at first, but I then started to relax, as I had finally completed the task. I gradually found myself back in my body.

(Anna A.)

I awoke, immediately got up from my body, and remembered that I needed to deepen the experience. I began palpating the dishes and other random objects – in a word, I “deepened”. Then, I began feverishly recalling what I had to do next. That’s when the figure of an angel in a white robe appeared, saying, “Have some pastries…” The taste of the pastries turned out to be way more realistic than in real life. They were so filling that I couldn’t even look at the pantry for a week afterwards…

Seeing an angel in one form or another while in a fully conscious state.

(Victoria S.)

…. I woke up. It was dark in my room. I got up and went into the hallway, where there was light. I stood in the middle of the hallway and looked through the large window there… I saw one of my yellow-eyed cats, but now her eyes were blue. That’s when I realized that this wasn’t real life. It dawned upon me that I needed to look for an angel. I ran through the hall and thought about whether to go outside or out on the balcony. I went for the balcony. I stepped out on it, and it was dark outside. Right then, an angel came out from the darkness. It was a man in all white, with white wavy hair reaching to just below his shoulders. I could even make out his face. Once he came closer to me, I saw the large wings on his back. I greeted him and said that I had been looking for him. He told me, “Congratulations, you’ve found me.” I couldn’t have been happier. I left the balcony and then turned back around, but he was no longer there…

(Dominic A.)

…I went back to sleep and woke up. This time, I just listened as the ringing got louder and starting vibrating in my head until it was in my whole body and it felt like it popped me out. I looked around until I thought to myself, “I want to see my guardian angel”. Then, a man appeared who seemed more alien than angelic, and I told him I was sorry for troubling him. He smiled and put his arm around me. I asked him if he knew where I could get food that I could eat that would help the pain in my back and the stress in my life. He asked me what I wanted to eat, and said whatever I wanted I could have. Then, a cheesecake appeared. I only had a bite of it, and I don’t remember it tasting like cheese cake, just that it was the best thing I’ve ever tasted…

(Jose D.)

I rested on my bed and started to meditate after waking up in the morning. I got up without my body about 5 minutes in. I walked around my room and started looking for angels. I found a small angel! At first I thought it was a small statue but he turned to look at me and moved his neck, head and hands. He was probably about 2 feet tall. I forgot to eat something after that because I was very excited that I could fly around and travel around the world. I managed to keep the experience going for longer that 5 minutes and after that I fell into a dream state…

(Anonym)

After leaving my body, I tried dozens of times to summon an angel through the front door of my apartment. One time, a six-foot tall being in white clothing appeared. It stooped in low through the entrance. Its wings were quite impressive: they were darkish and so large that their ends brushed against the walls of the entranceway, rustling like real feathers would. I had been holding raw eggs that I had taken from the refrigerator, and crushed one out of surprise. A vase with flowers stood nearby. I looked at it, and was pulled back into my body.

(Anna B.)

…I woke up in a cave I had imagined, and did not turn around to see my body, but felt that it was there. Meanwhile, all feeling was in my new body that had just jumped out. I was in a cave, and knew that the cave was in a forest. It smelled like pine. I heard something, and started walking towards the sound. I realized that the gravity was not as strong as in real life, and my steps where almost bounds. I was moving faster as well. I made a turn into a tunnel, and it got a bit darker inside. Only in an opening on the side did I catch sight of a sun beam. I looked to the side and saw 2 angels: male and female. It was a blond female and brunet man. I was standing right next to them, but they did not see me…

(Arlindo B.)

…That’s when it dawned on me to ask myself if I was dreaming… I called out, “Angel… angel of mine, come to me,” and an emergent speck of light in the distance gradually revealed more detail as it grew and lent the illusion of a translucent object approaching. I gazed at what was before me. My angel was a hooded figure with wings sprouting from its back. I asked the hooded angel who he was. There was no reply. The silence was eerie, and his authoritative stance, with folded arms and an inflated chest, conveyed a certain degree of impatience.

Not wasting any time, I requested to be fed and decided not to specify any type of food. The angel’s body language was still uncompromising, but he proceeded to pull out diminutive bunches of bananas from under his robe and hurl them my way. The bananas displayed a tenuous coloring, and were somehow partially lit in the dark spatiality where the encounter took place. I caught every single bunch with ease, and enjoyed eating the bananas without having to peel their skin. They were deliciously sweet and fresh and met my expectations of what good bananas should taste like…

(Ally C.)

…It happened on my second attempt when I was semi-awoken by my roommate. Making the attempt was surprisingly easy. I realized I was conscious, and immediately tried the “rotation method”. I felt myself rotating faster and faster, and suddenly felt myself lurch out of my body with relative ease.

I got up, didn’t see my body in the bed, and walked into the living room of my apartment. It looked more or less the same. There was a plate of sour cream and onion chips on the table, and I ate some. Then, I went to the refrigerator and had a peanut M&M. I was looking for angels… There was, however, an African-American man who I did not recognize in one of the rooms. He was soft spoken and kind, and in retrospect, maybe this was my “angel”. I don’t remember what we talked about specifically, but I do remember him telling me it was time to go, and I instinctively walked back to my room, lay down, and went to sleep…

(Yuri O.)

Before falling asleep at night, I imagined how I would try to leave my body in the morning and search for an angel. As mulled this for a few moments, I suddenly realized that I was already standing in front of my couch. A white angel lay on it, spreading his hands down his back. I was so surprised that I didn’t know what to do next, and that’s when everything ended.

(Mitra M.)

…. I awoke and began to try doing “rotation”. I soon began feeling that I was actually rotating, and realized that it was time to separate from my body. I got up and found myself in my bedroom… I remembered that I needed to look for an angel, and began searching around me… An ethereal vision of an angel hanging in the air appeared in front of me. At one point, the image became quite distinct…

Note. The accounts have been truncated to excerpts illustrating only the above indicators. In some cases the angels did not take on a traditional appearance (e.g. wearing white and having wings), although the participants nevertheless identified them as angels (descriptions have been truncated to excerpts describing key indicators). The term “out-of-body experience” (OBE) is used sometimes to refer to the sensation of having left the body, and not a real exit of some essence from the physical body – although this is just the impression often had by test subjects. Actually, OBEs and lucid dreams are one and the same phenomenon, or different methods of achieving the same phenomenon (LaBerge,1985).

Fear Related Statistic

12.08.2011 by OBE RC

 The study shows that 30% of people experience fear during the first phase experience (OBE+lucid dreaming). There is no big gender difference (women 31% / men 29%). If people thought that their souls really leave their bodies, they have twice more chances to experience fear (rise from 23% to 47%). If people aren’t familiar with the phenomenon, they have almost twice more chances to get fear too (rise from 28% to 47%; only for spontaneous first experiences). If people do not see alive beings in the phase, they have on 55% more chances for fear (rise from 23% to 36%).

The study is based on statistic information from 771 people/1-74 yo/spontaneous and intentional phases (accuracy for all data is 85-90%).

Statistical Evidence of Women’s Predisposition

12.07.2011 by OBE RC

The study shows that women have more chances to experience the phase state (lucid dreaming + out-of-body experience) and master it, than men. The difference may be seen in the way how people experience the first phase in their life.

The most hardest way to experience the phase state is to get it without previous sleep or before falling asleep. Women get the first phase experience during these periods of time on 67% more times, than men:

Men 16.95%/women 28.3% of all periods of time.

Maybe, the same statistic shows that the direct method(intentional, without sleep) to induce the phase state works for women on the same 67% better, than for men.

The study is based on statistic information from 619 people/1-74 yo/spontaneous and intentional phases (accuracy for all data is 85-90%).

Gender/Season Correlations

12.01.2011 by OBE RC

The study shows that chances to get the first spontaneous phase experience (OBE/LD) grow during summers for men and during winters for women.

The same data show that men and women make first successfull attempts to achieve the phase state during the same unique seasons (winter and summer).

For women (all/spont/intent):

Winter 35/34/34%;

Spring 20/22/19%;

Summer 25/25/26%;

Fall 20/19/21%;

 For men (all/spont/intent):

Winter 24/23/26%;

Spring 20/23/18%;

Summer 33/34/30%;

Fall 23/20/26%;

The study is based on statistic information from 542 people/1-74 yo/spontaneous and intentional phases (accuracy for all data is 85-90%).
